ACU rural social work placements: locations named in the 2026 workshop

At a glance

ACU names Broken Hill, Orange and broader regional options. Separate the workshop possibilities from a confirmed host, course requirement and relocation plan.

ACU's 2026 Shantou social work workshop names Broken Hill, Orange, the Northern Territory, South Australia and Victoria when presenting rural and remote community engagement and placement opportunities. It also allows for options “by discussion”. For an applicant interested in rural practice, these are specific possibilities to ask about rather than a confirmed placement offer.

The list mixes towns with much larger regions. Understanding that difference is useful before choosing accommodation or assuming that a location will be available for your cohort.

What places does the workshop name?

Named places Broader geographic options
Broken Hill Northern Territory
Orange South Australia
Victoria

These labels reproduce the geographic scope of slide 10. A state or territory entry does not identify a particular town, agency or vacancy, and not every place within a named state is rural or remote.

The slide refers to both community engagement and placement opportunities. Ask which activity is being discussed and how it relates to your course requirements. A location on the slide does not establish that any activity you arrange there will count as an approved field placement.

Confirm the learning arrangement before the travel plan

A useful enquiry starts with the proposed host and student role. As general preparation, ask what work you would observe or undertake, which learning objectives apply, how supervision and feedback work, and who handles concerns about the arrangement.

Describe whether your interest concerns a particular place, a community or a type of work. Those are different starting points for discussion. The workshop's “by discussion” wording provides room to enquire; it does not establish that a preference will be approved.

Once an actual option is available, obtain the placement dates and attendance expectations, including any coursework commitments alongside it. The ACU placement and attendance planning guide explains the separate workshop information about agency days, campus attendance and travel. Confirm the arrangements for your own offering rather than combining two slides into a personalised timetable.

Build a budget from the confirmed arrangement

If an option would involve temporary relocation, consider travel to the location, local transport, accommodation and any costs of retaining your existing home. These are suggested personal budget headings, not university fees.

Ask whether accommodation, transport assistance or financial support is available and what conditions apply. Slide 10 supplies no such terms, so leave an unanswered support question visible in your budget instead of treating it as a promised benefit. Avoid non-refundable bookings until the actual arrangement is confirmed.

A placement location also does not establish a graduate job, employer sponsorship or migration advantage. The decision supported by this workshop is whether to investigate a rural learning opportunity, with its host, course role and practical costs made clear.
