Australian Catholic University (ACU): Social work placement and attendance planning

At a glance

Plan for ACU social work placements: four agency days, a campus day, possible long commutes, attendance obligations and pre-placement requirements.

Four days at a placement agency does not mean the fifth weekday is free. For applicants considering Australian Catholic University's Master of Social Work (Qualifying), that distinction matters when planning accommodation, caring responsibilities and paid work around study.

ACU's official 2026 Shantou social work workshop describes four agency days each week, with campus attendance on the additional day. It also warns that students may need to travel up to two hours one way to their agency. These are practical commitments to plan around, not details to leave until after arranging a regular work roster.

A placement week includes a campus day

The workshop describes two placements of 500 hours each, in the second semester of each year. Students must pass the prerequisite subjects before proceeding to placement.

During the placement arrangement described, the campus day falls on a Monday or Friday, depending on timetabling. It should not be treated as a spare day simply because it is away from the agency. Protect the campus requirement as well as the four placement days when thinking about your availability.

This is the schedule presented in the workshop, not a permanent timetable guaranteed across all campuses and future intakes. ACU's 2027 international course information lists Canberra and Strathfield in Sydney. The exact days, attendance times and placement dates applicable to an individual student still need to be settled before making inflexible commitments.

Plan the journey, not just the distance

The workshop's travel warning is specific: an agency journey may take up to two hours one way. It does not say that every student will have a two-hour commute, nor establish a permanent maximum for every placement.

For accommodation planning, proximity to campus is therefore only part of the picture. An address that makes classes convenient may not make an agency placement equally accessible. A useful travel plan considers the route to each location, connections between services and how the return journey fits around other responsibilities.

Until an agency location and attendance times are known, avoid building a weekly schedule that depends on a short commute. Leave room for travel and recovery rather than allocating every hour outside placement to another obligation.

Transport costs also need their own budget line. The workshop notes that international student travel concessions vary between states. Do not assume that student status automatically brings the same discounted fares wherever you study.

Attendance extends beyond placement hours

The workshop describes classes as typically face-to-face, on site and mostly during working hours. Some have mandatory attendance requirements. That makes a timetable based only on placement hours incomplete: coursework attendance has to fit too.

Assessment also involves more than individual essays. The material identifies individual and group work, written tasks, oral presentations and role plays, including in-class and recorded activities. Critical and reflective writing is required and assessed.

The planning implication is to keep space for preparation and collaboration, not just attendance. A group presentation or role-play assessment may require coordination with classmates; a calendar with no flexibility outside scheduled sessions can be difficult to manage. The workshop does not supply a universal weekly allowance for this work, so an invented study-hour formula would be misleading.

Placement readiness starts before the first agency day

Passing the prerequisite subjects is one condition. Meeting the required checks is another. The workshop lists a Working With Children Check, a National Police Check, vaccinations and any other requirements mandated by the agency as pre-placement compliance obligations.

Keep the applicable requirements, evidence and deadlines together when preparing for placement. Vaccinations are mentioned here only as a compliance requirement; the material does not establish one identical vaccination checklist for every agency or provide individual medical advice.

A workable plan should account for:

  • The prerequisite subjects that must be passed.
  • The agency days and separate campus attendance day.
  • Travel time and fares for both locations.
  • Mandatory class attendance and assessment preparation.
  • The compliance evidence required before placement begins.

The key question is not simply whether 1,000 placement hours fit into the degree. It is whether the placement weeks, campus attendance, commuting and assessment work fit together in your life. The workshop gives applicants a concrete starting point for that decision without promising a particular agency, location or personalised timetable.
