The goal is not to see everything. The goal is to remove what does not fit so the remaining options are genuinely workable.

Start with the non-negotiable constraints
Before you type a single keyword into a university course finder, write down the conditions you cannot change. These typically fall into four categories.
Academic background. Your completed qualifications and grade average set a floor you cannot go below. A course database lets you filter by entry requirements, but only if you know what you bring. An undergraduate degree with a credit average opens one set of doors; a diploma with a pass average opens a narrower set. If your prior study is in an unrelated field, conversion programs and graduate-entry pathways become relevant filters.
Career licensing. Some professions require a specific accredited degree to practise in Australia. Engineering, accounting, nursing, teaching, psychology, and law are obvious examples. If your long-term plan includes skilled migration or registration with a professional body, the course must carry the right accreditation. A course database will show this in the degree description, but you have to look for it deliberately—it is not a filter most search tools surface automatically.
Location constraints. Regional study can affect post-study work rights and migration points. If you are committed to studying in a particular city or regional area, apply that filter early. It removes entire faculties at a stroke and prevents you from falling in love with a program you cannot attend.
Duration and structure. A two-year master’s degree in Australia typically qualifies for a post-study work visa; a one-year degree usually does not. If you need the work component, filter by duration before anything else.
Use the database as an elimination engine
Once your constraints are clear, the course database becomes a tool for systematic removal. Most university course finders allow you to filter by degree level, discipline, campus, start date, and study mode. Use all of them.
A productive search sequence looks like this: select postgraduate (or undergraduate), then the broad discipline area, then the specific field, then the campus, then the intake month. At each step, the number of results shrinks. When you reach a manageable list—perhaps ten to fifteen degrees—stop filtering and start reading.
The reading phase is where many people go wrong. They skim the degree title and move on. Instead, open the full course page for every remaining option and check three things in order.
First, the entry requirements in detail. A course might list a bachelor’s degree as the minimum, but the fine print may specify a related discipline, a minimum GPA, or prerequisite subjects you do not have. If you are unsure, the course page will usually link to the university’s admissions policy or a qualification equivalency table.
Second, the course structure. Look at the core units, not just the degree name. A Master of Data Science at one university might be heavily mathematical with a machine-learning core; at another, it might lean toward business analytics with SQL and visualisation. The degree title is the same; the knowledge you leave with is not.
Third, the CRICOS code. Every degree available to international students in Australia must be registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students. If a course page does not display a CRICOS code, it may not be open to international applicants, or it may not support a student visa. This is a hard stop.
Match the degree to the outcome, not the interest
Interest matters, but it is a weak filter on its own. A stronger approach is to work backward from the outcome you want.
If the outcome is employment in Australia, identify the occupations on the skilled occupation list that align with your background, then find the degrees that feed into those occupations. The relationship is not always obvious. Some occupations accept a broad range of qualifications; others are rigid. A course database will not draw this link for you, but it gives you the raw material—the accredited degree titles—that you can cross-reference against professional body requirements and migration settings.
If the outcome is further study, check whether the degree provides a research pathway. A coursework master’s may not qualify you for a PhD; a master’s with a dissertation component usually will. The course page will state this, often under a heading like “pathways to further study” or “research opportunities.”
If the outcome is a return home with a globally recognised qualification, focus on institution reputation and degree portability. In this case, the course database is less about accreditation and more about the university’s standing in your target job market.
Compare across institutions without getting lost
The same degree title can mean different things at different universities. A course database helps you compare, but only if you compare like with like.
Create a short table for yourself with columns for degree name, duration, core units, accreditation status, campus, and any distinctive features such as industry placements or capstone projects. Fill it in as you go. When you have three or four options in the same field, the differences become visible quickly. One program might offer a semester-long internship; another might not. One might require a portfolio; another might admit solely on grades.
Do not rely on aggregated third-party rankings or comparison sites that reduce degrees to a single score. The information you need is on the university’s own course pages. If you need to compare costs, go directly to each university’s published fee schedule—these are updated annually and are the only reliable source for tuition figures.
Revisit your filters before you commit
A course database is a snapshot. Degree offerings change between academic years, and a program that appears in a 2026 search may not run in 2027. Before you apply, confirm that the degree is still offered in your intended intake, that the CRICOS registration is current, and that the course structure has not shifted in a way that affects your plans.
The same principle applies to your own circumstances. If your English test score comes in lower than expected, or if your final transcript changes your GPA, go back to the database and re-filter. A degree that was out of reach may now be viable, or a previously safe option may no longer be available.
A course database rewards methodical use. The people who get the most from it are not the ones who spend the most time browsing. They are the ones who arrive with clear constraints, apply filters without hesitation, read course pages thoroughly, and walk away with a shortlist of degrees where every entry is a genuine possibility.
