Australia’s proposed AI kill switch and data centre control bill

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that the government will establish a legal framework for artificial intelligence and data centres within the next year, as part of what he called a “world-first” AI regulatory framework.

Speaking at the University of Sydney, Albanese said Australia is at a critical stage in shaping the future of AI and cannot simply passively accept technological changes. Instead, the country should set rules to ensure AI development aligns with Australia’s interests.

What the framework includes

Under the government’s plan, large AI data centres will face stricter requirements, including reducing water usage, bearing the costs of new electricity supply, and paying fees for connecting to the power grid. This is intended to prevent energy and infrastructure costs from being passed on to households and businesses.

On copyright, Albanese stated that AI companies cannot use Australians’ books, music, art, or news content to train AI models without creators’ control.

Reactions

Opposition leader Angus Taylor criticised the creation of a new AI office, saying it could add bureaucratic processes. He argued that the government should prioritise ensuring Australia obtains the most advanced AI technology for cybersecurity.
