Australian Catholic University’s Master of Health Professional Education focuses on teaching and learning in health professions. The 2027 handbook describes an online course of 120 credit points and a minimum duration of 1.5 years full-time or the part-time equivalent. It is not a route for international students to study in Australia on a student visa.

For a nurse considering a move towards educational work, the course offers a different focus from deepening expertise in a clinical specialty. Its subjects address health education theory, facilitation of learning, curriculum design, and assessment and evaluation. The sources describe education within the health professions; they do not establish an initial schoolteacher-registration outcome.

What teaching skills does the course address?

The stated curriculum connects several parts of educational work. Theory provides a basis for thinking about how learning happens. Facilitation concerns helping learners engage with that process. Curriculum design concerns how learning is organised, while assessment and evaluation concern how it is examined and judged.

These distinctions can help a prospective student explain their interest. Someone who wants to improve the design of teaching is asking a different question from someone who wants to become more effective at assessing learning. Both interests fit the broad subject areas listed, without implying that the degree guarantees a particular educator job or workplace promotion.

Entry combines relevant study and experience

For 2027, the handbook requires a completed bachelor’s degree in a health or allied-health discipline, or completed postgraduate studies in one of those disciplines. This academic basis must be combined with at least one year of health or allied-health professional clinical or work experience before admission. ACU’s admissions policy also applies.

The academic background and experience requirement should be read together. A relevant degree does not make the experience requirement disappear. Equally, an interest in teaching, or work experience on its own, should not be substituted for the relevant academic background.

This is particularly useful for nursing students planning ahead. The course is a health-professional education option with an experience requirement, not a general promise that any new nursing graduate can enter immediately. The relevance of an individual applicant’s study and work history remains part of the admission assessment.

Online delivery changes the study plan

The handbook explicitly allows offshore international students, while limiting international availability to students not seeking to study on a student visa. Permission to participate online from overseas does not establish an on-campus offering. Online delivery and student-visa eligibility are different matters, and the course information does not offer a student-visa study route for international students.

A realistic comparison therefore starts with the educational goal and the delivery model. If the goal is to develop teaching skills within healthcare, the curriculum is directly relevant to that question. If the goal is initial schoolteacher registration or an on-campus Australian study experience, this course should not be presented as meeting it.

Check the duration against the intended study plan

The 2027 handbook and the course-page header both list 1.5 years full-time or the part-time equivalent. The course overview, however, contains a one-year full-time statement. These summaries are not consistent. This article retains the handbook’s minimum duration as an attributed course rule and does not promise a one-year completion plan.

Match the intended stream and enrolment pattern with ACU before relying on a completion date. A minimum duration, an online delivery mode and an individual timetable answer different questions.
