ACU online clinical nursing: 2026 and 2027 awards, entry conditions and offshore limits

At a glance

The 2026 and 2027 handbooks use Clinical Nursing and Advanced Clinical Nursing names. Compare the award sizes and entry scope without assuming online study is open offshore or that prior study guarantees credit.

Australian Catholic University (ACU)’s October 2026 nursing workshop lists clinical nursing among further-study directions. To understand the online awards, however, the admission year matters: the 2026 handbooks use Clinical Nursing, while the 2027 handbooks use Advanced Clinical Nursing.

One important boundary remains in both years. These ACU Online courses are not available to offshore international students. Their international availability is for students not seeking to study on a student visa. Online delivery must not be interpreted as an invitation to enrol from overseas or as a pathway to Australia on a student visa for these courses.

The 2026 Clinical Nursing awards

The 2026 handbooks describe three awards:

All three require a Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent and current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra), alongside the applicable admissions policy. These are further-study options for an already registered applicant, not replacements for an initial nursing registration qualification.

The pages flag unit-code changes associated with the 2027 curriculum while still identifying their admission rules as 2026 rules. A change notice is not a reason to combine the two years into one set of conditions.

What the 2027 name change does and does not change

The 2027 Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Advanced Clinical Nursing retain award sizes of 40, 80 and 120 credit points respectively. Their approved location is ACU Online; all three handbooks retain the offshore restriction and the student-visa limitation.

The 2027 Graduate Certificate handbook requires a nursing bachelor’s degree or equivalent and current Ahpra registration. Intensive Care and Perioperative applicants must also provide evidence of experience in their chosen specialty. It specifies one year part-time as the minimum duration; a named-specialisation award requires two units from the same specialty.

The 2027 Graduate Diploma handbook lists one year full-time. Its academic entry wording is a nursing bachelor’s degree, equivalent or higher, together with current Ahpra registration. It identifies different unit choices for progression towards the master’s project or research stream. That is not an unconditional promise of progression.

The 2027 Master handbook likewise combines the relevant academic qualification with current Ahpra registration. Its project and research streams are distinct study structures, not interchangeable labels for the same work.

Exit awards are conditional, not three automatic qualifications

The master’s rules in each year allow an exit with a certificate or diploma only when the relevant award requirements have been completed. An accumulated credit total alone does not establish that the necessary subjects have been taken. Named specialisations also have their own unit requirements.

Similarly, recognition of prior learning is an assessment of relevant earlier study, not permission to subtract a chosen number of credits from a new course. Do not confuse an exit award earned during study with credit granted at admission.

Two details remain unsuitable for a fixed personal calculation

The 2027 master’s handbook gives a full-time duration range of 1.5–2 years, while the course page displays 1.5 years in its header and a range in its description. This article therefore does not present one unconditional completion time for every 2027 applicant.

There is also an unresolved issue in the published master’s prior-learning text: the Advanced Clinical Nursing graduate certificate appears in both the up-to-40 and up-to-80 credit-point statements. It would be inappropriate to silently rewrite an award name or promise 80 credit points for a certificate. The individual credit outcome is left open here.

Those unresolved details do not erase the clear award sizes, registration requirement or offshore exclusion. Keeping them separate allows a useful comparison without inventing a correction to the official text.
