ACU nursing overseas study: destinations, learning formats and course credit
ACU’s nursing workshop maps overseas learning opportunities, not confirmed departures. Separate exchange, short experiences, observation and community engagement before interpreting credit or availability.

Australian Catholic University (ACU) presents overseas learning as more than a choice of destination. Its official nursing workshop of 15 October 2026 lists locations across Asia, Europe, South America, the Pacific and the United States, alongside several kinds of learning. Read that material as a map of opportunities, not a list of departures accepting bookings.
The important distinction is between where an experience takes place, what students do there, and how it contributes to their course. A city name answers only the first question.
Where does the workshop place overseas learning?
Slide 11 names these destinations:
- Cambodia: Battambang; Chile: Santiago; Denmark: Aarhus.
- India: Hyderabad; Nepal: Kathmandu; the Philippines: Manila, with the University of Santo Tomás.
- Timor-Leste: Baucau, Dili and Atauro Island.
- United States: Boston, Massachusetts, and North Carolina.
- Vanuatu: Port Vila, Paonangisu and Santo.
- Italy: ACU’s Rome Campus.
Slide 12 separately highlights Port Vila and Pele Island in Vanuatu. These place names should not be combined into a single assumed itinerary. Nor does the list establish that every destination runs annually or that every nursing student can participate.
The workshop also mentions university core curriculum, Indigenous health and culture, health care ethics and nursing immersion. It does not assign every listed learning type to every destination. In particular, the Rome entry should not absorb the entire list as though it were one confirmed program.
Exchange and short experiences are not interchangeable labels
ACU’s nursing work-integrated learning page distinguishes an exchange with the Catholic University of America from Short-Term International Student Experiences (STISEs). It gives examples of STISE locations rather than a single uniform overseas curriculum.
Activity descriptions matter too. The health sciences community engagement page describes lectures and healthcare-facility visits in Chile, and professional and community settings in the Philippines. Its Boston example separates observation in a healthcare setting from community engagement. Observation, participation in community activities and clinical practice should therefore not be treated as equivalent simply because all happen overseas.
The page describes second- and third-year Bachelor of Nursing students enrolled in NRSG267 or NRSG373; that scope should not be transferred to every workshop opportunity. Its Boston entry still identifies 2025 as the next offering, which does not confirm a future departure.
Keep the Vanuatu source locations separate
The workshop's Vanuatu labels and ACU's public example describe different levels of detail. Slide 11 names Port Vila, Paonangisu and Santo; slide 12 adds Pele Island. The separate community engagement description describes Port Vila Central Hospital and Emua Village, including a family stay and community learning. These sources do not establish one combined itinerary or identify the activities shown in the workshop photographs.
Does overseas learning count towards the degree?
ACU’s nursing FAQ says overseas activities may contribute to the degree, but whether they count as theory or clinical placement depends on the particular study tour. An overseas experience is therefore not automatically a substitute for a specified number of placement hours.
The same FAQ describes ACU organising overseas accommodation and travel, with students paying the costs and some programs offering a subsidy. Organisation is not the same as funding, and a possible subsidy does not establish an individual student’s entitlement.
For planning, keep three separate records: the named program, its academic contribution, and the arrangements for that particular offering. A general destination list cannot supply missing selection criteria, dates, available places or costs. This article does not infer permission to perform clinical procedures from an activity description.
