Australian Catholic University nursing placements: how 800 hours are spread across three years

At a glance

ACU’s nursing degree includes 800 placement hours, with most scheduled in years two and three. Plan around the year-by-year load, not the headline total.

ACU’s October 2026 nursing workshop gives a clear breakdown of clinical placement in its three-year Bachelor of Nursing: 80 hours in the first year, 320 in the second and 400 in the third. Those allocations add up to 800 hours across the degree.

The useful detail is not just the total. Placement time is weighted towards the later years, alongside a curriculum that moves from health promotion and foundational knowledge to illness care, complex needs and preparation for practice. If you are comparing nursing courses, that year-by-year pattern tells you more than a headline number alone.

First year: 80 placement hours alongside the foundations

The workshop’s course overview allocates 80 hours of placement to the first year. Its listed study areas include human biology, evidence-based practice, Indigenous health and culture, and an introduction to the nursing profession.

This is the smallest of the three annual placement allocations. It sits within the first year of the course, rather than representing the whole year’s study workload. The same overview describes a degree comprising 24 courses over three years, with four courses per semester.

For planning purposes, keep the two measures separate: placement hours describe one part of the degree; course enrolment describes the broader academic program. The workshop does not provide a weekly timetable or say how those 80 hours are divided into individual placement blocks.

Second year: 320 hours as the curriculum develops

The second-year allocation rises to 320 hours. The overview groups this year around illness care, with study areas including further human biology, mental health nursing, medical and surgical nursing, ageing and ethics.

These subjects help explain the progression shown in the course overview. They should not, however, be read as a promise that every student will receive a placement in each named specialty. A subject list and a placement allocation are different things.

Before making work or travel commitments, ask for the placement calendar that applies to your campus and intake. The annual total alone does not establish the dates, shift pattern, location or travel time for an individual placement.

Third year: 400 hours and the transition towards practice

The final year carries 400 placement hours. Its curriculum includes advanced clinical reasoning, chronic illness and disability care, palliative care, and transition to clinical practice.

That makes the third year the largest placement component in the workshop’s breakdown. It is worth accounting for that increase when considering how your responsibilities outside university might fit around the degree.

It is not evidence of a guaranteed graduate job or a reserved placement with a particular employer. The workshop presents a course structure, not an individual employment offer.

Why does another slide say “800+”?

The workshop uses two different levels of detail. Its headline slide lists “800+” clinical placement hours among the reasons to consider ACU nursing. The detailed course overview states 800 hours and specifies the annual allocations of 80, 320 and 400.

For understanding the structure presented in this workshop, use the explicit year-by-year breakdown. Do not turn the “+” into an additional, unspecified requirement, or assume it means every student will receive extra placement hours beyond the stated course schedule.

This article concerns the three-year Bachelor of Nursing structure shown in the workshop. It should not be used to infer the duration or placement requirements of a different nursing entry pathway, credit arrangement or combined degree.

What should you confirm before accepting an offer?

The workshop answers how the hours are distributed, but not every practical question about attending placement. Ask ACU which course version applies to your offer, when placement blocks are scheduled, what preparation must be completed beforehand, and how locations and attendance arrangements are communicated.

Those answers are more useful for an individual study plan than dividing the annual hours by an assumed working week. The workshop does not supply the assumptions needed for that calculation.
